State chartered, NCUA-insured Ashoka serves the national and international Shambhala sangha including: Shambhala Centers, Shambhala Training, Naropa University, all the various organizations associated with the founder, their employees and family members. As part of Trungpa's vision for creating enlightened society, he founded Ashoka Credit Union to meet the community's need for a strong financial institution where meditators and their money would be treated with mindfulness. HistoryEmperor Ashoka initiated a golden age in medieval India. His reign was noted for its strength, security, and compassionate social concern. Ashoka is also a Sanskrit word which means "without torment." Ashoka Credit Union is a strong, secure financial institution founded on the principle of banking without torment. It is based on the century-old tradition of community credit unions which offer to members, cooperative, sound, convenient financial solutions. StatisticsFounded in Boulder Colorado, January 28,1976 by President Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, we are currently 600 international members strong, with $2 million in assets. We granted $1,000,000 in new loans in 2004. GovernanceGovernance of the Ashoka Credit Union is by a Board of Directors elected from the membership, and we are regulated by the State of Colorado Division of Financial Services and the National Credit Union Association (NCUA), the federal deposit insurer. All members are invited to inquire about participation in credit union governance.
